All You Need To Know About Mandalas

mandalas

Today, most people know mandalas, have heard about them, seen, or painted them. They are very popular and promise great wisdom, power, and sacredness. In general, a mandala is a circular shape with a center, and inside, different forms are arranged uniquely.

Here are some things about the mandala that you probably did not know!

  •      Do you know who invented the mandala?

The circular shape of the mandala appears very early in the history of humanity, although its origin or who created it is unknown. Bas-reliefs have been found on rocks with circles, spirals, and similar designs in Africa, Europe, and North America. Its meaning has always been ceremonial, ritual, magical, and healing.

  •  Do you know why many religious rites begin with the drawing of a circle, delimiting the interior space and why everything inside it is considered sacred?

When you make a mandala, the circumference limits and separates the inside from the outside, marks generating space, and transforms it into a special area. From that moment on, everything that happens in there is in the “here and now,” but also beyond time and space. The circle is an integrating, multidimensional, and complete energy center. The created space becomes sacred, containing transformational spiritual laws. From that moment on, it is an energetic vortex or vibrational center.

  •      What is the oldest mandala?

The sun wheel is the oldest representation of a mandala found, dating back to the Paleolithic era.

  •      Do you know which towns made mandalas?

It is generally believed that only the Hindu culture made mandalas, but if we look closely, cities and countries around the world have circular symbols and shapes. This includes India, China, Tibet, the United States of America, Australia, Africa, and Europe.

  •      Do you know what the word “Mandala” means?

The word “Mandala” in Sanskrit, Tibetan, and Nepali has the same meaning - “Sacred Circle” or “Energy Circle.” It is composed of Manda (essence) and La (concretion). Therefore, it can be translated as the concretion of the essence, and that is what happens when we create them.

  •      Why does the mandala attract us so much?

The mandala is stored deep in our unconscious. This makes us always respond to it intuitively. The organization of the mandala is similar to the structure of the cosmos and everything that exists in it. The entire universe is arranged around a center, from the smallest atom, cell, flower, and the eye to the limitless things like the solar system and the galaxies. It is engraved deep in our unconscious, and it surrounds us. Our origin is a mandala, and it is the womb of our mothers where we are held, protected, and safe in a spherical space. We feel naturally conditioned to respond intuitively to it.

  •      Formerly, what was it used for?

It is believed that a mandala was used in rituals for religious or mystical purposes. Each town or culture has its own way of creating it, with certain forms that compose it, as well as the objective with which it will be applied. It can be used as an object of worship for a certain deity, as ornaments of temples and sacred places, as a focus of visualization and meditation, for initiations, as amulets to ward off evil spirits and to protect homes. It can also be used for artistic expression. For example, the Tibetan sand mandalas are made at the request of the community to bring peace and harmony to the world and humanity. They are also blessings and a means of active meditation, the essence of which rests in the processes of their construction.

Hence, it would not be wrong to say that mandalas have been in our midst for a very long time and are the very essence of our beings.
